In March and April 2024 I took my oldest son John to Peru for 9 days in celebration of his 14th birthday.
We flew straight into the city of Cuzco, standing at 11,500ft of elevation. There we spent a few days acclimating and taking one day trip to hike up to Lake Humantaya (at over 14k ft elevation), before starting on a 4 day hike across the Inca trail, culminating in a tour of Machu Picchu.
